Technology helped Shawn Saylor turn his cows waste manure into electricity and a monetary profit. It also eliminated a bad smell in the area. His neighbors were also able to use the electricity. Mr. Saylor received a government grant to help pay for his energy conversion and plans on making a profit in 5 years or less.

1. The digester would definitely have been a good investment regardless of the government subsidy. Mr. Saylor world got all his money back in less then five years. After that time he would greatly increase his profits by using the digester.
2. This energy source is better than traditional energy because it takes animal waste and converts it into electricity. It eliminates the smelly cow manure from the area and uses the electricity to power Mr. Saylor’s farm and his neighbor’s farms as well.

This article creates more questions than it has answers for. According to Edmunds.com, the average rebate was $4,000. They said that 125,000 vehicles out of 690,000 vehicles were vehicles that would not have been sold anyway. This makes a person wonder how effective the CARS program really was. The is no doubt that the auto sales contributed to the economy’s growth and had a trickle down effect for the money being spent. However the real question is, did this really help our economy, or was it more money being needlessly spent, that the American taxpayer ultimately has to pay for.

2. I think that the overall sales for the year will increase because people that have sold their car have extra money in their pocket added with the money saved up for a new car (if there is any). This will also help with being green, because people can buy new hybrids, flexfuels, etc. that have better gas mileage and reduce emissions.
5. Ford was a proponent because they had so many old cars like the Mustang, F-150′s, etc. on the road that if they bought all the old Ford’s in the USA, they would give away about $30,000,000 (estimate). Cash for Clunkers boosted the economy because more money was spent and the auto industry got a much needed boost.

Article of the Week #10 Reflection

I did not like this article because it did not make any health care reform provisions any more clear. These issues are very controversial, and our government can’t even decide what to do. It seems that some people no matter what they do will be unfairly charged more for insurance than other people. It seems like there are many loop holes that will allow corporations to charge higher health insurance fees to people who refuse to co-operate with their wellness program. Some medical issues should be able to be private between a patient and a doctor. The employee and the government should not have the power to interfere in personal health issues.

1. Some corporations consider it acceptable to charge higher prices for people who don’t meet certain health targets because they make the assumption that their employees have control over “wellness issues”. The corporation can charge a higher insurance rate to an employee who is over weight and smokes because that employee has a higher risk factor. The employee who already has a disease can’t really do anything about it, and shouldn’t be discriminated against.
3. I don’t really know what the right answer is, and from the sound of the article there is still much debate. It sounds fair that higher risk people should pay more but just because you have high risk doesn’t mean you will actually get sick. You might not and you would be made to pay more for nothing. The young and healthy should not have to pay for the old and the sick. That’s like asking them to pay for someone else’s mistake.

I thought the article about the green roof at UTA was interesting. I hope that UTA can get the funding to do more research. I wonder if I would ever want a green roof on my house. It reminds me of the olden days in America when farmers in the prairie put sod and soil on the tops of their roofs. A lot of people looked down on these poor farmers because of their odd living conditions. I don’t think my neighbors would appreciate looking at a lot of green growing on the top of my roof.

I think the Michigan Legislature should change the laws about day care. I wonder if they just want more tax money. Parents should be able to leave their children with neighbors or friends for a short while if that is what they want to do. The state govt. should not interfere with parenting. Children watched by friends or neighbors are better off because they get to be with their friends before they have to go to school. When both parents work, it is nice to be able to rely on friends, neighbors, or relatives for help.
